A woman’s egg reserve is finite and begins to decline in both quality and quantity from her mid-20s, with this decline speeding up after the age of 35. While the chances of conceiving each month are about 25% at peak fertility, this decreases to around 5% by the age of 40.
Freezing eggs during the prime reproductive years offers an opportunity to preserve fertility for the future. Two critical factors to consider when thinking about egg freezing are the quality and quantity of the eggs, as well as how many eggs you would like to freeze.
If you’re considering this option, it’s advisable to speak with Dr Nisenblat to discuss your timeline and available options as soon as possible.
To explore whether egg freezing is the right option for you we recommend scheduling a fertility preservation consultation with Dr Nisenblat. During this session, Dr Nisenblat will explain the process in detail, including who can benefit from egg freezing and how to begin.
This consultation will give you the knowledge you need to make an informed decision about your fertility preservation options.
The first step involves pre-treatment investigations, including two blood tests and an ultrasound. These will be ordered during your initial consultation. Some of these tests may have been already ordered by your GP. After these tests, Dr Nisenblat will see you to determine your treatment plan and confirm your eligibility for Medicare rebates. If you need additional support in making your decision, we offer counselling services to help you feel confident and prepared to move forward.
Once the process begins, you will undergo ovarian stimulation through self-administered injections for about 10 days. During this time, you’ll visit the clinic for morning blood tests and ultrasounds to monitor your progress. There is an option to include nasal spray or tablets to help alleviate the stress that may be associated with injections. These options will be discussed on an individual basis.
Following the stimulation phase, you’ll undergo a short day procedure to retrieve your eggs, this is performed at St Andrews Hospital. We recommend taking the day off work and bringing someone along to accompany you, take you home, and ensure you rest for the remainder of the day.
The final step is vitrification, where your eggs are carefully frozen using advanced technology. They will be stored safely until you are ready to use them in the future. Our scientist will update you on how many eggs were frozen on the day of your procedure.
The cost of egg freezing can vary depending on individual medical factors and the specific treatment protocol. Dr Nisenblat is affiliated with Fertility SA, Genea clinic, who offer up to 24 months of interest-free* payment plans to help make fertility treatments more accessible.
