Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) refer to a range of medical treatments and procedures involving a woman's egg and a man's sperm to help individuals or couples conceive a child.

ART can be a complex and emotional process. It may involve multiple rounds of treatment before a successful pregnancy is achieved. It is important for individuals and couples to discuss their options with a fertility specialist.

There are a range of ART treatments including:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI): IUI involves the insertion of washed sperm directly into the uterus, increasing the chances of pregnancy in some.
  • In vitro fertilisation (IVF): IVF involves the fertilisation of an egg outside of the body, followed by the transfer of the embryo(s) into the uterus.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): ICSI involves the injection of a single sperm directly into an egg, bypassing any potential issues with sperm motility or morphology.
  • Surrogacy: Surrogacy is an arrangement where a person carries and gives birth to a baby for another person or persons who can’t be pregnant themselves.
  • Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT): PGT-A (previously known as preimplantation genetic screening or PGS) involves checking embryos for abnormalities in the number of chromosomes. PGT-M (previously known as preimplantation genetic diagnosis PGD) involves checking the genes of your embryos for a specific genetic condition.
  • Egg or sperm donation: Egg donation is the use of eggs from a donor to fertilise with the partner’s sperm or donor sperm. Sperm donation is the use of sperm from a donor candidate for individuals or couples when sperm is not viable or available. The process involves careful implications counselling, genetic counselling, selection of donor (known or de-identified) and appropriate medical management.
