Fertility preservation refers to the techniques used to preserve fertility in individuals who may wish to have children in the future.
Fertility preservation is often recommended for individuals undergoing medical treatments that may impact their fertility, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer. It can also be used by individuals who wish to delay childbearing for personal or professional reasons. The success of fertility preservation techniques varies depending on factors such as age, health, and underlying medical conditions. It is important to discuss options with a medical professional to determine the best course of action for each individual case.
Types of fertility preservation include:
Egg freezing: Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) involves the extraction of a woman’s eggs, which are then frozen and stored for future use.
Sperm freezing: Sperm freezing (sperm cryopreservation) involves the extraction of a man’s sperm, which are then frozen and stored for future use.
Embryo freezing: Embryo freezing involves the fertilisation of a woman’s eggs with sperm in a laboratory, after which the resulting embryos are frozen and stored for future use.
Ovarian tissue freezing: Ovarian tissue freezing involves the removal and freezing of a piece of a woman’s ovary, which can be used to produce eggs in the future.
